Life on Atlantis went through several stages.

There was the “Oh my god, we’re all going to die ” stage.

The “What has McKay done this time?” stage.

The “Things are getting too quiet, something’s about to happen.” stage.

And Lorne’s personal favorite, “Team Sheppard just came back from another gruesome adventure, (which Team Lorne probably had to help them out of) and life can get back to normal until the next catastrophe.”

Lorne tried not to feel too smug for having been right to worry about Sheppard’s late check-in. It had been painful watching McKay go through withdrawal. He’d had to leave the infirmary long before the scientist was coherent. He just couldn’t bear to watch him that long.

But they were all back and none the worse for wear (with the possible exception of Ford, whom Lorne had still never met, but was inclined to respect for nothing more than his tenacity), and the city was quiet again.

Not too quiet though, as McKay was review his minions work in the labs from the time he’d been gone.

“What the hell is this supposed to be Kavanaugh?”

“It’s an outline of my plan to increase efficiency in the water filtration system. It should increase the output of fresh water by 10%.”

“Yes, if you want to ignore all the rules of modern engineering and assume we’re working with 4th century technology here.”

Lorne smirked from the doorway as he watched Rodney berate the unfortunate Kavanaugh for another ten minutes before stepping in to drag Rodney off to the mess for dinner.

As he listened to McKay rattling on about the incompetence of his entire staff, Lorne found himself grinning madly. Everything was back to normal.

At least until the next catastrophe.
