Stupid Hair (G)

I can't believe it. I actually wrote a McShep piece. What is the world coming to?

Title: Stupid Hair
Rating: G
Pairing: Sheppard/McKay - preslash
Spoilers: Inferno
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me...sadly
Feedback: yes, please.
Summary: Carson thinks McKay must be a special kind of oblivious.
Author’s Notes: written for the [livejournal.com profile] gatecreation episodes challenge.

Carson entered the labs to find Dr. McKay sitting at his desk, hunched over his laptop and mumbling to himself.

“I can’t believe Kirk scored another alien bimbo. And she wasn’t even really a bimbo. She was a scientist. I was doing just fine until he swooped in with his smile and his gun and his stupid hair. He always gets the women. I don’t get it. Hello, genius here. You’d think a scientist would be more impressed with that. But no, Kirk gets her every time. Stupid hair, stupid gun, stupid smile, stupid hair.”

“You said that one already.”

Rodney whipped around on his stool. “What?”

Carson smiled. “Stupid hair. You said that already.”

“What...what are you...how long have you been standing there?” Rodney finally blurted out, pointing his finger at the doctor and attempting to sound accusing, but really only succeeding in sounding moderately less embarrassed.

Carson just laughed. “Not long. I came to see if you were going to catch lunch any time soon.”

“Huh. Yeah, I guess I could eat.”

“The day you tell me you can’t eat is the day I’ll know to really start worrying about you,” Carson replied with a chuckle.

“Oh, ha. Very funny.” Rodney stood up and started out of the lab, Carson trailing behind him.

“So what was all that about?”

“All what?”

“All that about Sheppard’s hair and gun.”

“Nothing. And who said I was talking about Sheppard?”

“Well, I’ve never heard you call anyone else Kirk, so I just assumed...Ah.” Carson’s face brightened in understanding.

“Ah? Ah, what?”

“You’re jealous.”

“Jealous? Don’t be ridiculous. What could I possibly have to be jealous about?”

“You’re jealous of the colonel and Norina.”

“That is utter nonsense. Why would I be jealous of them? Have you heard anything?”

“It doesn’t take a genius to see the way she’s been throwing herself at him.”

“She has, hasn’t she. Like some sort of...of...intergalactic hussy.”

Carson laughed out loud at that. “Hussy?”

“It’s what my mother used to call...er...women of ill-repute.”

“Prostitutes?”

Rodney blushed. “Yes. Prostitutes. It would serve him right if he comes down with space herpes or something.”

“I don’t think it’s something we need to worry about, but I’m sure the colonel is intelligent enough to use protection.”

“Under normal circumstances certainly, but what if he gets caught up in the heat of the moment as it were? The last thing we need is to have a mini-Sheppard running around. We’d never be able to keep them both in hair gel.” Rodney paused while Carson’s words sunk in. “What do you mean we don’t need to worry about that?”

“I don’t think the colonel is interested.”

“What? Of course he is. She’s beautiful and blonde and she obviously wants him. Why wouldn’t he be interested?”

Carson shook his head, wondering how the man could possibly be so blind. “Let’s just say he’s got his eye on someone a bit closer to home.”

“Huh. Well, I hope it’s no one on my staff. I don’t need him hanging around the labs looking all suave and distracting my people with that impossible hair and that slouch and...and...that hair.”

They’d reached the mess by that time and Carson saw Col. Sheppard waving them over to join him. They filled their trays and made their way to his table. As they sat down, Carson thought that Rodney must be a special kind of oblivious not to notice the way Sheppard’s face lit up when they arrived.

When Rodney asked him what he was smirking about, Carson just shook his head and said, “Sometimes I just have to laugh at the situations we find ourselves in.” Both Rodney and the colonel gave him a strange look, but Carson just smiled at them and continued his lunch.
