Enthralled by Alfred Bryan

Teach me to sin--
In love's forbidden ways,
For you can make all passion pure;
The magic lure of your sweet eyes
Each shape of sin makes virtue praise.

Teach me to sin--
Enslave me to your wanton charms,
Crush me in your velvet arms
And make me, make me love you.
Make me fire your blood with new desire,
And make me kiss you--lip and limb,
Till sense reel and pusles swim.
Aye! even if you hate me,
Teach me to sin.

“Let's just go without them,” Laurie says, tugging on Dan's sleeve like a little girl trying to get her father's attention.

“Just a little longer,” Dan answers, also in character. He leans against the door frame leading into the part of the Owl's Nest they now refer to as Nikola's lab. Nikola sits inside, huddled over a piece of machinery while Jon stands opposite, parts floating in the air around him until they're needed.

“I know what it's like when he gets this way,” Laurie insists. “He won't be out for hours, and when he finally does come out, he won't even realize he's late.”

Dan nods. He knows how it is too, knows it won't even occur to Nikola to apologize. Still he says, “Just another ten minutes.”

He can't explain it, not to Laurie, who has never really had a hero, not one she looked up to anyway. He can't make her see what it's like. If King Arthur himself materialized in Dan's living room and invited him on a quest, he could hardly be more enthralled than he is watching the man who invented radio (his friend, his lover) working in his basement.

When the ten minutes are up, Laurie tugs his sleeve again. “Dan, really, let's just go. They won't even realize we're gone. We'll bring them back some dinner.”

“Sure, sure,” Dan says, distractedly. “Just let me get them some coffee first.”

Neither Nikola nor Jon need coffee, and Dan knows this, but he makes his way upstairs anyway, leaving Laurie in the basement as he puts a pot of coffee on to brew. Still, he likes to feel like he's doing something, like he's contributing. So often, next to Nikola, he feels so inadequate, so pointless, and though he knows his own work is important and that Nikola thinks he's brilliant—at least, he says Dan is brilliant, though sometimes Dan wonders if that isn't just something Nikola tosses out to keep him happy—he wishes he could be like Jon sometimes, someone Nikola looks up to, admires, respects.

It's another thing he can't explain to Laurie, just like he can't explain why he doesn't want to leave Jon and Nikola behind. Hell, he can't even explain Nikola's strange jealousy of Laurie to himself, let alone articulate it to her.

He pours two steaming mugs of coffee, adding a liberal amount of sugar to Nikola's. He's not sure how Jon takes his coffee, but he figures the scientist won't mind it black.

(He pauses, in adding Nikola's sugar, always having to stop himself from putting in even more than Nikola likes, stop himself from always preparing things for...

He checks the canister, though, making sure there's still a good number of cubes left. Just in case.)

Maybe they should go on without the other two. Maybe it will be all right. Maybe Nikola won't be upset.

Maybe it would be better if, just once, Dan pretended he didn't care one way or the other.

But he brings their coffee down, sliding Nikola's mug next to him, briefly glancing over the vampire's shoulder to see what he's working on, and Nikola catches his wrist, pulling his hand over to kiss his palm before releasing it.

Dan smiles and moves back over to his position at the door.

“Can we go now?” Laurie asks quietly.

“Just a few more minutes.”

She frowns slightly and mutters, “He didn't even look at you.”

Dan just smiles, enthralled.

oshsdfhnghhjg Why can you write Dan better than I can write Nikola? Because Yes. All of this. Perfect.

From, the line about King Arthur to him checking the sugar for sign of Rorschach to him worrying about Nikola's feelings and also wishing that he didn't. How like... yes. All of this. XD

I love you. XD ♥
