“Why is it that all the interesting things happen to the colonel and Rodney?”
Lorne looked up at his chess partner and cocked an eyebrow. “Interesting?”
“Yesterday they entered a virtual reality.”
“Okay.” Lorne’s face was a study in indifference.
“It is the ultimate video game, Major. You do not find that interesting?”
“Sure. Right up to the point where there’s a Wraith trying to kill them...again.” He moved his bishop three spaces to capture a knight.
“Yes, but you are missing the point, Evan.”
“So enlighten me, Doc.”
“You and I, we are stuck here on Atlantis, twiddling our thumbs and worrying, while they are out there, saving the galaxy.”
“I thought you didn’t like going off-world, Dr. Z.”
Radek pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and let out a long-suffering sigh, moving his rook to capture one of Evan’s pawns. “I do not. Lately though, it seems nothing of note ever happens in the city. It is all happening out there.” He waved his arm vaguely, evidently indicating the rest of the galaxy.
“Trust me, Doc, you don’t want to get tangled up in what’s going on out there,” Evan mimicked Radek’s motions before turning his attention back to the board. “It’s a whole mess of shit you don’t ever want to see. Check.”
Radek frowned at his pieces, as though it were their fault he was losing spectacularly to the major. He moved his king one space to the left. “I think I would feel better if just once they had a boring mission. I do not like speculating on what might be happening out there. I cannot concentrate when they are off-world.”
“Obviously not. Checkmate.”
“What? How did you...? Either you are getting much better, Major, or I am really losing my touch.”
Evan smiled his lazy smile and leaned back in his chair. “Don’t sweat it, Doc. You get distracted when they’re off-world, and I took advantage of that.” He smirked a bit before adding, “Plus, Rodney’s been teaching me some tricks.”
Radek ran his hand through his tangled mess of hair, messing it up even more than usual. “Ha I knew it. I knew he didn’t want you just for your looks.”
Evan laughed. “Well, we all know the colonel just wants you for your brains, so I guess we’re even there.”
Their shared chuckle was cut off when they both heard Elizabeth’s voice on their comms. “Major Lorne, Colonel Sheppard’s team is coming in hot. I need you in the gateroom immediately.”
Lorne barked out an “on my way, ma’am,” and was out the door in seconds, pausing only long enough to toss Radek a sympathetic look and say, “I guess it’s back to the circus. I’ll let you know if they’ve found any more Ancient video games.”
