John watched as Carson typed up a few last notes on the retrovirus experiment. They were supposed to be having dinner, but Carson had said that watching the Wraith queen feed upon one of her own men had put him off his feed.

It was clear that the doctor was upset by the ramifications of his work. He had intended it to be used as a weapon by humans to turn the Wraith into harmless humans. He’d never dreamed it would be used as a weapon by the Wraith to turn their own kind into a viable food source. John’s chest tightened at the distraught look on Carson’s face as he worked.

This thing they had, whatever it really was, was still fragile, still new. John had been so amazed when he’d realized that Carson returned his feelings that he’d never really gotten past that into the details of working out a relationship. Between the danger of breaking regs and the danger of living in the Pegasus galaxy, neither of them had really had the time to think about what they were doing. It was a way of coping. John shook his head. It was more than that. There were feelings involved, but that was a big part of it. John knew it wouldn’t be the same with someone else as it was with Carson, but at the heart of it, they needed each other to help them face their daily lives. They needed that warmth to come home to.

John’s pragmatic side was beginning to take over now, though. It had been great with Carson these past few months, sure. They got along well, the sex was amazing, and he could literally sit and listen to Carson’s rumbling brogue for hours on end. But now he was beginning to wonder if it could really work after all.

It had been Carson’s gentleness that had drawn him in the first place. He was the healer; John was the hero. They complemented each other, or so he had always thought. But maybe the truth was they were just too different. John wasn’t sure how much further Carson could be pushed with this weapon before he snapped. And when that happened, John couldn’t support him. He had a job, and that job included doing whatever was necessary to keep the Wraith from Earth. He was as wary as anyone about working with the Wraith, but he was willing to try.

Carson had been appalled when the queen had turned on her underling, watching horrified as she drained the life from him. John had been disgusted, sure, but he’d been seeing it as a form of cannibalism, while Carson saw it as the sacrifice of a human life. It was a difference John wasn’t sure they could overcome, and it was beginning to create fractures in their carefully shaped world.

It had begun with Michael. After that disaster, John had needed to use all his best charming persuasion to get Carson to stop fretting over it. Taking Carson’s mind off his many worries was usually fun for John. He liked watching as the lines disappeared from Carson’s forehead and his dimples reappeared slowly, followed by the crinkles around his eyes. But John had taken no joy in convincing Carson to forget about the Michael fiasco. It had taken all his patience not to just yell at Carson that Michael was a Wraith and always would be, that Ronon was right and they should just scrap the whole thing.

A few months ago he’d been on cloud nine. Elated to think that Carson really cared for him. Just optimistic enough to believe this could really work. Now he was standing in a doorway, pondering the best way to tell Carson that this was all a big mistake.

A quiet snick pulled his mind back to the present, and he looked up and saw Carson closing his laptop and sighing.

Before he could lose his nerve, before he got lost in those morose blue eyes, John cleared his throat and said, “Carson? We need to talk.”
