Evan woke to a familiar face hovering over him. Just not the one he really wanted to see.

“Awake, are ya, son?”

“How long have I been out?”

“Not too long. I’d say about four hours.”

Evan looked around the infirmary, trying to find Radek.

Carson smiled sympathetically at him. “He’s not here. He stayed just long enough to make sure you weren’t seriously injured, then he left.”

Evan couldn’t help flinching as he asked, “He’s pretty pissed off, isn’t he?”

“Aye. I don’t know what happened between you before you left, but I’d wager it’ll be quite some time before he’s willing to forgive you.”

“I guess I kind of expected that.”

The doctor patted his arm saying, “Well, no need to worry about it just yet. You’ll be staying here tonight. You can deal with those troubles in the morning. How’s your head?”

The next day, Evan was released from the infirmary with a pair of crutches, a bottle of painkillers and instructions to stay off his injured foot for at least the next week. All things considered, he figured he’d gotten off pretty easy.

It had been a hell of a mission. They’d had no idea what they’d encounter on the other side of the gate, so they’d pretty much gone in guns blazing, hoping to overwhelm whatever resistance they found with sheer numbers. Several hours later, they’d found Sheppard, Teyla and Ronon, but they’d lost one marine and had another three seriously injured. By the time they made it back to Atlantis, they were another man down, and Lorne had been knocked out.

Lorne made his way back to the quarters he shared with Radek when the Daedelus was off-planet. He closed his eyes before opening the door, praying that he and Radek would be able to work this out. The door swished open, and Lorne walked inside to find the quarters empty. That wasn’t too surprising. Radek was probably in the labs, and Evan had expected not to find the Czech waiting for him when he got home. What he hadn’t expected was to find a dresser drawer and the closet wide open, recently cleared out.

He slumped onto the couch and ran his hands over his face. Apparently it wasn’t going to be as easy had he had anticipated.

Evan tried to find Radek in the labs that afternoon, but he was intercepted at the door and told in no uncertain terms that he was not allowed in until he and Radek worked out their differences. That this message came from McKay was an irony not lost on Evan.

***

He tried to catch up to Radek in the mess that evening, but as soon as he got there, Radek deposited his tray and calmly walked out. When Evan tried to follow him, Radek found the nearest transporter and was whisked off to parts unknown before he could catch up.

It was three days before Evan managed to speak to Radek. He knew better than to try to butter him up with gifts, though he had a stash of chocolate lying in wait in the unlikely event that they ever patched things up.

Radek had made it abundantly clear that he had no wish to see Evan, so Evan had decided to try something a little sneaky. Enlisting the help of McKay had actually been relatively simple. He’d just cornered the scientist outside the mess, literally backing him into a corner, and scowled when McKay hesitated to agree, finally reminding the scientist that he owed him...big time...and it was time to pay up. His plan in motion, he sent Radek the following email:

To: Dr. Radek Zelenka - civ., CR
From: Major Evan Lorne - USAF

Dr. Zelenka,

Dr. McKay has informed me that there is an unused Ancient lab on the west pier that warrants further study. He has requested that a marine with the ATA gene be assigned to escort you to the lab in order to determine its purpose. Unfortunately, no marines possessing the gene are available at the requested time, so Col. Sheppard has requested that I be your escort.

I will meet you at the lab in question at 0830 tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Major Evan Lorne, USAF

When Evan arrived in the corridor outside the lab, he found a very perturbed Czech waiting for him.

“Sorry I’m late, Doc.” He tried smiling, hoping it would relieve some of the tension, but Radek didn’t even acknowledge his comment. He just activated the door mechanism and stormed into the lab.

Only, it wasn’t actually a lab.

Evan stepped in behind him and watched as Radek surveyed the space. It was a conservatory, long cleared of any plant life, whose glass doors led out to a balcony overlooking the central tower.

Radek wheeled around to face the major. “If this is some pathetic attempt to romance me in the hopes that I will forgive you, it is a waste of both our times, Major.”

Evan sighed. He’d given up thinking it might be so easy. “Radek,” he began, not sure what to say. “We need to talk.”

“I think you have said all that needs to be said on the matter, Major. You made your feelings quite clear.” He stomped over to Evan and brought his hand up to strike Evan’s cheek. The resounding crack echoed in the empty room.

Dropping his head, Evan said, “I deserved that, I know...I know, okay? I was an asshole, and I’ve deserved every minute of the torture you’ve put me through since I got back. If I could go back and change what happened, I would.”

Radek had turned away from him and was looking out the windows.

“Radek? Say something.”

When he finally replied, his voice was so quiet that it took Evan a moment to realize he was actually speaking.

“It was not that you left. I knew you would. I could have forgiven you for that. It was that you left when you knew you had hurt me.”

He hadn’t cried since their wedding day, but Evan felt the hot tears sliding down his face. “I’m so sorry, Rad. I never meant to hurt you. I was angry.”

“You mean too much to me, Evan. I cannot stand by silent while you risk your life on foolish quests.”

Evan crossed the room to stand behind Radek, pulling him into his arms so that Radek’s back was snug against his chest. “I wouldn’t expect you too.”

“Do not ever do that again.”

Evan sighed, the expelled breath ruffling the hair at the back of Radek’s neck. “That’s not a promise I can keep.”

Radek turned in his arms. “I know.”

Evan tilted Radek’s chin up so that they were face to face. “I will promise you this, though. I will never again leave Atlantis like that.”

Radek smiled sadly and pulled his husband in for a kiss. “That will have to be enough.”
