They’d been back on Earth for three days now, and Carson still wasn’t sure what to do with himself. After nearly a year in Atlantis, with virtually no free time, always rushing around working on something that might someday save someone somewhere, he found coming home to be both a relief and a disappointment.

Of course he’d spent most of his time since returning at the S.G.C. looking through stacks of files of people far more qualified than he was for exploring other galaxies. At times he wondered if he’d been chosen only because of his research into the ATA gene, or even only because he possessed the gene himself.

He’d been plagued by these doubts many times over the previous year, but they’d been pointless then. He was there; he couldn’t go home, so whether or not he was the right person for the job didn’t really matter. Now he was seriously considering resigning his position.

It would be simple enough really. No one was ever forced to serve in Atlantis, not even the military contingent. It was too dangerous and too important to entrust to anyone who wasn’t absolutely sure they wanted to be there.

Three days on Earth and he was only just now motoring up the drive to the place he’d always called home, no matter how long he’d been away.

He stepped out of the car and didn’t even take the time to retrieve his luggage from the boot. There would be time for that later. Right now he just wanted to be with the only person he knew could make him feel worthwhile again.

As he walked up the stairs to the familiar front door, he wondered if maybe he should have rung first. But the door swung open before he had a chance to even raise his hand to knock, and a small woman with greying hair and sharp, blue eyes stood framed, obviously prepared to send off any traveling salesmen who might have dared to darken her doorstep.

The sharp look faded as soon as she took in the man on the stoop. Her breath caught for a moment, and then she pulled him into an embrace so fierce Carson feared he might have a few cracked ribs to tend to that evening.

***

When he made his way back to Colorado after his far too short visit home, Carson realized that he wasn’t sure his mum had succeeded in boosting his confidence.

Still, he mused, it was all due to her that he’d come back at all. When he’d told her his fears about not being the right man for the job, she’d brushed them aside, saying, “If they didnae want ya, lad, they’d not have asked you in the first place. So stop yer whinging, and make me proud, love.”

He laughed a little at the thought of his sweet mum convincing him to take on the most daunting challenge he could imagine by treating him as though he were still just eight years old and had come home from school complaining that his maths class was too difficult, and that he’d never understand long division.

He still wasn’t sure he understood long division, but he knew he’d never willingly disappoint his mum.

If she only knew what she was sending him out to face...

Carson smiled a little at the thought. Perhaps some things were better left unsaid.

Lovely little fic that explains Carson's comments to Elizabeth in Intruder. Poor dear, plagued by doubts but still deciding to return to Atlantis. I always thought his confidence problem was due to 1) not feeling like a brave action hero type and 2) working in an Ancient city surrounded by all their accomplishments would make anyone feel small and uncertain.

Thank you for this fic, I love insights into this character.

Oh, lovely look at Carson's relationship with his mother, and into his psyche. And oh, the ending...*sigh* If only she had known.

Thank you!
