Title: The Source of His Trouble
Rating: PG
Pairing: Lorne/McKay
Spoilers: None
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me...sadly
Feedback: yes, please.
Summary: Sheppard’s team was late for check-in.
Author’s Notes: written for the gatecreation episodes challenge.
Sheppard’s team was late for their check-in.
Lorne pushed aside the niggling fear that was pricking at his mind. The original expedition members still thought of him and everyone else that had come in The Great Personnel Shift as newcomers, but he’d been in Atlantis long enough to know that Sheppard’s team was always late. It was when they checked in on time that you really had to worry.
The fear would not be pushed aside this time though. Something wasn’t right.
Lorne had been through years of training before joining the Stargate program, most of which had involved some sort of precision. He knew that facts were important. You couldn’t just jump to conclusions all the time. You had to make sure you knew all the details of any given situation. But it had been several years since he’d joined the Stargate program, and if there was one thing traveling through wormholes on a daily basis had taught him, it was that sometimes your gut reaction was the right one.
That’s why he was in the gateroom, pacing nervously. There weren’t any ulterior motives.
Something else was pricking at his mind now. Lorne took a moment to identify the new niggler. Doubt. He was doubting his motivation. The thought annoyed him. He’d learned a lot of lessons in the Air Force, and even more in the Stargate program, but one lesson they’d both taught him was that you couldn’t afford to doubt yourself. Doubt led to hesitation. Hesitation led to fear. And fear led to the Dark Side. That place where nothing you did ever seemed right and before you knew it, you’d been decommissioned.
There was only one thing for it. This was a time to identify facts.
Fact: Sheppard’s team was late.
Fact: Lorne was worried.
Fact: Lorne had never worried about a late check-in from Sheppard before.
Fact: Only one thing had changed between their last late check-in and this one. Lorne had personal reasons to be concerned about the team that he hadn’t had before.
Damn.
Looked like, as usual, McKay was the source of all Lorne’s troubles.
