Title: Long Day’s Journey Into Night

Spoilers: Coup d’Etat
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me...sadly
Feedback: yes, please.
Summary: Lorne comes home after a long, long day.
Author’s Notes: written for the gatecreation episodes challenge. Title comes from Eugene O’Neill’s play, though I actually have never read and/or seen it, and have no idea what it’s about.

Lorne sighed as he stumbled into his quarters. It was late. Really, really late. He glanced at his watch and saw that it was so late it was actually early.

It was bad enough that he’d been captured by apparently friendly locals and handed over to the Genii to be used as a guinea pig in their ATA gene therapy research. That was pretty standard for Atlantis actually. They’d eventually made it back, which meant that overall the day had been a success.

Unfortunately, after they got back, Lorne had had to sit through a tedious (and long) debriefing, and a disturbingly thorough post-mission physical. And, being the conscientious leader he was, he’d stayed to make sure all of his men got a clean bill of health as well. By the time he made it back to his room, he could barely pick his feet up off the floor.

As he sat down on the bed to take off his boots, he wondered if he really needed that shower as badly as he had originally thought. He raised one arm for a quick sniff-check, and groaned when he realized that, yes, he did really need that shower. Probably more than he had originally thought. After removing his boots, he stood, painfully slowly, and made his way to the bathroom, shedding his clothes along the way, making a mental note to burn them tomorrow.

He stood under the warm stream of water for several minutes before he managed enough energy to begin actually washing himself. Something in the back of his mind told him he needed to be careful not to fall asleep in the shower. It would be the ultimate irony to have survived everything he’d been through only to drown in the bathroom once he was safely home.

His sleep-deprived mind latched onto that thought for a moment. Home. It was the first time he’d really thought of Atlantis as home. But he realized that even though he’d been there less than a year, Atlantis was already more of a home than anywhere he’d ever been. He’d moved around a lot as a kid, military brat that he was, so he had no strong connections to any one place back on Earth. He’d always thought of his home as being the place where his family was. The fact that he now thought of Atlantis that way intrigued him, but before he could philosophize any more on the subject, he realized that he was slumped against the shower wall and really needed to get to bed before he woke up on the floor.

He got out of the shower and toweled off. Wandering into his room, he managed to locate his dresser and rummaged around for a clean pair of shorts. He made another mental note to do laundry in the morning when he burned the clothes he’d been in for the last three days. Eventually, he made his way to his bed and slid beneath the covers, only moderately surprised to find another body already there.

“Geez, McKay, you didn’t think to shower before stopping by?”

The body mumbled something unintelligible in response, and Evan sighed, slipped his arms around the other man and pulled him close. He was just drifting off to the sounds of gentle snoring from McKay when he decided that he had been right.

Atlantis was definitely home.
