debris_k, who asked for Rodney/Ford (pre-enzyme) with the prompts understanding, first kiss. I hope this is schmoopy enough for you. I did my best. :)
Rodney’s not sure when Ford had started following him around all the time. One day he just realized that he hadn’t had a meal away from the young lieutenant in three weeks.
And they weren’t all on missions either.
In fact, just last Thursday, Ford had brought him lunch in the labs. The mystery-meat casserole wasn’t terribly appetizing, but even Rodney tired of powerbars sometimes.
They didn’t talk much. Rodney’s not sure what they could possibly carry on a conversation about. His brilliance was sure to go over Ford’s head, and Ford’s talk of explosives would bore Rodney to death. Hmm...maybe that was a tactic they taught in Marine training. When all else fails, bore them with land mines.
Mostly they just sat and ate. Ford always had that ridiculous grin on his face, and Rodney scowled his way through MRE after MRE.
And then it stopped.
It was a Thursday again, and Rodney realized that he hadn’t seen Ford at all since they’d gotten back from P8X-239 on Sunday. He probably wouldn’t have noticed except that it was 2200 and he hadn’t had dinner yet. Usually when that happened, he’d look up to see Ford standing in the doorway grinning and carrying two trays.
But today there was no Ford and, more importantly, no food.
He meant to go to the mess to pick up some dinner, but he somehow ended up outside Ford’s door. Before he was even sure what he was doing there, he’d activated the door chime and Ford had answered.
“Hey, Doc.”
He was grinning again. How did he do that all day without pulling a muscle?
“Hi, uh, lieutenant. Can...can I come in?” He didn’t wait for an answer, just pushed past Ford into the room and started pacing.
“Did you need something, McKay? ‘Cause I was just going to bed.”
Rodney looked up and noticed that Ford was wearing boxers and a grey t-shirt. He looked at the bed and saw that the sheets were rumpled. “Sorry. Uh...sorry. I just...You didn’t bring me dinner.”
Ford looked confused. “What?”
“You, uh, you didn’t bring me dinner. You always bring me dinner, but today it was 2200 and I still hadn’t eaten anything.”
Ford was looking at him strangely. “Sorry, McKay. I thought you didn’t like it, so I stopped.”
Rodney made no attempt to hide his disdain at this ridiculous assumption. “Why wouldn’t I like it? It’s food, and I don’t have to get it myself.”
Ford wasn’t grinning any more. “Right. It’s food. Of course.” He sat down on his bed, and if Rodney didn’t know better, he’d think Ford looked disappointed. “You know, you could probably ask the major. I’m sure he’d be happy to pick up something from the mess for you.”
“What? Why would I ask Sheppard to do that? You always bring me dinner. I mean...why would Sheppard even want to....Come to think of it...why do you?”
The smile on Ford’s face couldn’t exactly be called a grin, but Rodney wasn’t sure how to classify it. “I like to.”
“Yes, but why? I mean, we never talk. Usually I just keep working on whatever I’m working on and you just...what do you do, anyway?”
“Nothing really. I just sort of...watch you.”
Rodney may have been the smartest man in two galaxies, but it took him a moment to put it all together. “You watch me? Why would you....Oh.” He looked at Ford with his eyes wide.
Ford looked away. “Yeah, oh.”
“Well...that’s just stupid.”
Ford stood up, obviously angry. “Yeah, well, I’m sorry. You didn’t have to come all the way here to tell me I was stupid. You coulda just said it over the radio or something.” He pushes Rodney towards the door.
“Wait, wait! What are you doing?”
“I’m showing you out, McKay.”
“But why would you do that? I thought you wanted...unless you had a different reason for watching me eat every day.”
Ford stopped trying to manhandle Rodney out of the room. “Wait, what?”
Rodney let out an exasperated sigh. “Do I have to do everything in this relationship? Really, the Marine Corps must have dropped their standards for officers considerably since...”
But Rodney didn’t get to finish, because somewhere in the rant, Ford finally understood, and he grabbed Rodney’s face with both hands and kissed him hard.
When he pulled back, Rodney stammered, “Well, yes, okay then. Umm...before we do anything else, I need to go to the mess, because I really don’t think you want me going into hypoglycemic shock on you.”
Ford grinned at him. “No sweat, Doc. You wait here. I’ll get it.”
