Title: A Savage Jealousy
Rating: G
Pairing: Grodin/Weir - unrequited
Spoilers: Home
Disclaimer: None of these characters belong to me...sadly
Feedback: yes, please.
Summary: Peter ponders what he'd do if he went home.
Author's Notes: written for the
gatecreation episodes challenge. The title comes from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
Word of Dr. McKay's latest hypothesis spread through Atlantis like wildfire. If he could make it work (and he usually could) they would be able to dial Earth from M5S-224. The thought that someone might have the opportunity to return to Earth, if only for a short time, was sparking a spate of jealousy among those who knew they would not be given the opportunity.
Peter Grodin was the sort of man who did his job without complaint. His duty came first, and he would never put his personal desires before that. That said, though he knew he would not be the one to return to Earth (if anyone actually did), he indulged himself in a few fantasies of his own.
Most involved returning unexpected to his family in Islington, inspiring celebrations of Prodigal Son-like proportions. A few were more exotic, involving women he'd never had the courage to pull falling into his arms and confessing how much they'd missed him.
But his favorite fantasy was the one he knew would never happen, even if they were all miraculously able to return to Earth someday.
It began with walking up to his mother's house and ringing the bell. His mother would answer, frozen in shock for a moment at his sudden appearance before pulling him into a tight embrace. When his mother had finally composed herself, Peter would pull back and wave his arm to indicate the woman at his side. His mother's smile would become impossibly wider as he said, "Mother, this is Elizabeth." His own smile all the explanation that was needed.
So when he found his boss sitting alone in her office, a wistful look on her face, he remembered his own fantasy and ventured to ask her what was on her mind.
She smiled shyly, and hesitated as though wondering whether to be honest. "I was just wondering what I would do if I were to go home."
Peter gave her an understanding look, "It seems to be a popular pastime lately." She smiled and he took it as encouragement and continued, "What is your current plan?"
"Well, I'm sure there would be hours of briefings in my future."
"Yes, but after that?"
"I would go and see Simon."
"Simon?"
"He's my...he's a friend. A very close friend."
The way she smiled while avoiding his eyes let him know what she was not saying. And Peter felt a surge of jealousy that was completely unrelated to whether or not he would be allowed to go home.

Date: 2007-01-17 04:33 am (UTC)You're right, there aren't enough Weir/Grodin fics. As much as I complained about Craig Veroni's dodgy accent in season 1, I do miss the obvious comradery Grodin had with Weir. I think she needs a friend like that to keep her human.
